Real Madrid returned to the top of the La Liga table after a 2-0 win over Mallorca on Wednesday night, however, for the third time in as many games VAR was involved in the match.
Real Madrid knew that they had to keep winning and the league is theirs. They almost got off to the perfect start when Reina saved well from Benzema’s header and Bale’s effort from outside the box.
But the visitors almost took a surprise lead but Courtois got the faintest of touches to Baba’s shot to divert the effort out for a corner. Just as Mallorca looked the better side, Los Blancos took the lead.
Modric played the ball to Vinicius and the Brazilian lifted the ball over Reina beautifully into the net. At first, the ball looked like it had gone into the side-netting. However, Mallorca felt that the goal shouldn’t have stood as they thought that Carvajal had fouled Dani Rodríguez. VAR revised the goal and awarded the tricky winger his 4th goal of the season. He almost got his 5th moments later but his chipped effort hit the bar.
After the break, both sides tried to find the crucial goal but it was a defender who got the decisive strike. After a Mallorca player handled the ball at the edge of the box, Ramos stepped up and fired a lovely free-kick into the top left corner of the net. The goal was incredibly his 9th goal of the season and his 94th in a Real Madrid shirt.
Budimir then had a couple of great opportunities for the La Liga strugglers but his efforts were straight at Courtois. Kubo was next to try his luck but fired into the side-netting.
There was some good news for the away side though with 6 minutes left on the clock. At the age of 15 years old, Argentinean youngster Luka Romero came off the bench to become the youngest ever player to play in La Liga. While his classmates were probably playing against Real Madrid on FIFA, he was playing against the real deal. A huge feat.
Los Blancos are ahead of Barcelona on head-to-head, while Mallorca remains in the relegation zone, three points behind Eibar.
